Blogging Tips: Don’t Dim Your Light

I get ready to publish a photo of myself on Instagram, and I have a moment where I ask myself why I’m sharing it. I ask myself what others will think about it. I ask myself if it seems braggy or like I’m showing off. To be frank, I’m not a braggy person & I usually try to make things seem less than what they are.
That being said, I never tell someone I’m a blogger when I first meet them, and I find myself shying away from talking about blogging in social situations for some reason. (Unless I find myself talking to another blogger, and then I will chat blogging tips all night long, because I truly love what I do).
My mother in law told me “Don’t Dim Your Light. We each have a responsibility to the world to use our abilities we were given and let them shine”. Let’s just say I’ve been blessed in the mother in law department! Everything she said hit home for me.
We as bloggers need to realize we are doing what we are doing for a reason. We need to not shy away from talking about it, and we need to be proud of blogging, and proud of our accomplishments.
No matter what you are doing, or what your expertise is, don’t dim your light for anyone. Let it shine, and let it shine bright.

Love this post! It reminds me of one of my very favorite quotes by Marianne Williamson – ” Our deepest fear is not that we are in adequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence liberates others.
Shine Lee Anne! Shine!!!!!!!
This is something I need to remember. When blogging it’s easy to start doubting ourselves. I know I start feeling insecure at times or like I don’t compare to others. We all have our talents and greatness to share with others. Thanks for the reminder to shine and not dim our light.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this post. I’ve been blogging since 2009 and I still feel weird talking about it sometimes. This is such a great reminder!

That’s great advice – I tend to shy away from compliments or talking about myself. Now that I’ve started this blogging adventure, I’ve actually kept it hidden from family and friends. I only just yesterday told my husband my blog name and what I blog about. He knew I was blogging but that was it. I think I’m afraid to tell people I know so that if I fail, they’ll be none the wiser. I REALLY want to make this a success (& my primary source of income) so I’m pouring my heart and soul into this. I guess like you I’ll have to stop dimming my own light. This was truly a great read & I’m definitely sharing this! Thank you 🙂
Thanks so much Lana. Let your light shine!
I love what your MIL said. It’s very true. It can be hard to put yourself out there and not feel braggy etc but you can’t let that stop you!
Yes! Amen to this. Thank you for such an important reminder!
This is a really fantastic post. I think you hit the nail right on the head. It is impossible not to feel that way sometimes, but regardless what our area is, someone out there may need to hear your voice.
Beautiful post! I am also loving your romper!
Great post! I do the same thing. I always avoid telling people that I blog (my coworkers, acquaintances, even friends and family). I love the idea of not dimming your light. Definitely something I should keep in mind! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thanks so much Shelly 🙂
You are a light to me!! Miss you
Awe, miss you too. Thanks Melissa.

What an awesome reminder and great advice from your mother-in-law. This is so true! We should all shine at what we are good at and not be scared to show the world our talents. Thanks for sharing this! 🙂
You have one very wise mother-in-law. 🙂 I love everything about this post Lee. As someone who reads your blog, sees your Instagram pictures and interacts with you online, you have never come across as braggy to me. You seem very real. You are very good at what you do – from putting outfits together and sharing your heart, to bringing us on your journey of motherhood. I struggled with this for so long and finally had to let.it.go. This is my business and I’m proud of it. Doubts and fears and “what do people think of me” thoughts will always be there for me, but as long as I’m being true to myself, I can get past it. 🙂
Thanks so much for your kind words Julie. I really appreciate it. Keep doing what you’re doing as well, because you’re doing amazing!
Great post! I think that all the time being a new blogger! I always wonder if the people that knew me before blogging think I am crazy! Thanks for sharing
Great read! I too feel strange telling people I am blogger but I think once we embrace who we are our writing hits an entirely different level.
Couldn’t agree with this more! It’s so important to be intent on why we do what we do, no matter the area of life! It helps reorient our focus and passion for it too. Thanks for sharing this…shine on! xo
Awe thanks Jessica 🙂
I love the message/idea behind not dimming your light! I am SO guilty of this!
Thanks so much Ashley. I think we all are!
I love this Lee Anne! I think so many of us feel the same way you do. But it’s true we all have something to say and we shouldn’t dim our own light! Enjoy what you do — and be proud of it!
Hi Lee Anne! I have been following you for a while on Instagram because I adore your style and the effortless look you have! I just read this post and it couldn’t be more true! I am new to blogging this year ( I absolutely love it) but I get a little discouraged when I feel like I am not reaching the audience I would like to be! After reading this post I have to shine because that is what God wants for me!
Thank you sweet mama!
